Ideal candidates for ear surgery or otoplasty are:
- Men, women, and children who are healthy and have realistic expectations
- Men, women, and children with prominent ears
- Men, women, and children who feel their ears are too large for the overall face.
Ear surgery will enhance your appearance by setting prominent ears back closer to your head or reduce the size of large ears.
Most patients, young and old alike, are happy with the results of ear surgery. If you are considering otoplasty for your child—keep in mind that ears usually reach adult size by the age of four or five.
Your Ear Surgery
Your surgery will be performed under local anesthesia with supplemental IV sedation for older children and adults, general anesthesia for small children. The surgery is done on an outpatient basis, takes from 1-3 hours and you can return home that day. Your ears will be slightly swollen, and possible bruised, but discomfort is usually minimal and easily controlled with medication. Stitches will be removed in one week, or dissolve. Some patients return to work in one to two days. A consideration, for both children and adults, is the necessity to wear a “head band” over the ears continually for six weeks, day and night. After that, it only needs to be worn at night for an additional period of six months. It should not be expected that both ears will be identical after surgery, because, chances are; both ears were not identical before surgery.
